Braves Win Opener Over Hermiston

KAMIAKIN 57, HERMISTON 48: With the start of their season delayed by the football team winning a state championship last weekend, the Braves finally took to the hardwood and looked predictably rusty in the first half against the Bulldogs.

But Kamiakin (1-0) shook off the effects of limited time in the gym in the second half, getting big performances from football players Garrett Paxton (19 points, five steals) and Isaiah Brimmer (12 points, four assists) to erase a five-point deficit at the start of the fourth quarter and knock off Hermiston (5-2).

“We had 16 turnovers in the first half, and most of them were unforced,” Kamiakin coach Brian Meneely said. “We were really rusty, and so for the kids to show some toughness and bounce back in the second half was huge.”

Kamiakin’s victory gives them some momentum heading into a home game against Eastmont on Monday that begins a stretch of five games in 11 days, which Meneeley said could be a challenge for his team.

“We’re gonna be behind for awhile, just trying to get caught up,” Meneeley said. “We’re making up so many games we’re not going to get a lot of time to practice. The good thing is that the kids love it when it’s fast-paced like this.”

Andrew James had 12 points and four assists to lead Hermiston, which had a 39-34 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

KAMIAKIN: Bailey 5, Garrett Paxton 19, Flynn 4, Grayson 6, Isaiah Brimmer 12, Green 3, Wolf 6, Nichols 2, Pischel. Totals: 17-36 21-34 57.
