Kamiakin boys rout Seattle Prep in 3A state quarters

By Craig Craker, Herald staff writer

TACOMA -- The west side of the state might not have given Kamiakin much credit entering the Class 3A boys state tournament, but it certainly is paying attention now.

The Braves cruised to a 65-42 quarterfinal victory against Seattle Prep on Thurs-day at the Tacoma Dome.

"I think when they see us and see we're not very big, they overlook us," Justin Pedley said. "Once we start hitting those 3s, they see we are not someone to be bargained with."

The Braves hit nine 3-pointers Thursday and played stifling defense against a much bigger opponent for the second consecutive game to pick up the victory. Kamiakin (23-2) will play Lakes in a semifinal at 7:15 p.m. today.

"I think every year the east-side teams have to prove themselves," Kamiakin coach Brian Meneely said. "We certainly don't think we're finished."

Despite giving up nearly three inches to each Seattle Prep player across the frontline, the Braves outrebounded the Panthers by 17 and held 6-foot-8 Seattle Prep post Mitch Brewe to 15 points and four rebounds.

"We kind of swarmed them inside," Kamiakin's Tyler Holle said. "We knew the guards had to rebound well, and they did. We just kind of battled."

3A boys: NC trips Kamiakin; MI tops Southridge

By Jack Millikin, Herald staff writer

SPOKANE -- Case Rada has seen his share of tough losses. He's also learned how to put them in the past.

As soon as the 6-foot-2 senior guard walked out of the Kamiakin locker room, he had all but forgotten about the Braves' heartbreaking 44-43 loss to North Central in the 3A state regional tournament at Spokane Falls Community College.

"It was tough, but we're over it now. The game is over," Rada said solemnly after almost single-handedly carrying the team in the final quarter. He scored eight of his game-high 19 points in the fourth quarter, including a go-ahead 18-footer with six seconds remaining to put Kamiakin up 43-42.

"Yeah, we're upset, but we've got to flush this one and move on," he said.

Braves Win vs Kennewick at Home

Playmaking guards may be king of the hill in the Mid-Columbia Conference in 2014, but Jim Fowler showed that a big man can still rule the low block.

Fowler, a 6-foot-6 Kamiakin senior, collected eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds while showing a particular presence in the paint in the Braves’ 55-48 MCC win over Kennewick at the Lions Den.

“Jim played a great game. He really helped us with defensive pressure. He made some great passes and got about three or four big rebounds down the stretch,” Kamiakin coach Brian Meneely said. “It was a fun atmosphere for a high school game. There’s a long history there (between Kamiakin and Kennewick), and this was like all the others. It was fun, but it wasn’t easy.”

The Braves took a 16-12 first-quarter lead, but the Lions scrapped to within 26-24 at the half.
